Ham & Potato Chowder Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups potatoes (peeled & diced)
  • 1 ½ cups cooked ham (diced)
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
  • 2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup heavy cream (optional, for extra creaminess)
  • Salt & black pepper (to taste)
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • Fresh parsley or chives (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the potatoes
    • In a large pot, bring the chicken broth to a boil.
    • Add the diced potatoes and cook until tender (about 10–12 minutes).
  2. Make the base
    • In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
    • Add onions and garlic, sauté until soft.
    • Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute (this forms a roux).
  3. Combine
    • Slowly whisk in milk until smooth and slightly thickened.
    • Add this mixture into the pot with the potatoes.
  4. Add ham & flavor
    • Stir in ham, cheese, cream, paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper.
    • Simmer for 5–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and creamy.
  5. Serve
    • Ladle into bowls, garnish with parsley or chives, and enjoy warm with crusty bread! 🥖✨
